WATCH: Ballet Documentary "First Position"

I danced from the time I was 4 years old until I was a Junior in High School. Thinking back on it, I never really took it too seriously. These kids in this documentary are super dedicated, and you definitely have to be that to make it to these levels... read about it and watch the trailer for "First Position" below:
17 year old dancer Michaela DePrince on Dancing with the Stars

via Clutch MagThe Youth America Grand Prix is the world’s largest student ballet competition. It’s open to dancers aged 9-19 years old and it provides full scholarships to the top ballet schools in the world. In its 13 years of existence, the Youth America Grand Prix has awarded over $2 million in scholarships. It is the most exclusive, coveted student ballet competition there is–and of the over 5,000 top tier contenders who vie for spots each year, about 200 are chosen. The award-winning documentary, First Position, which debuted last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, follows six competitors from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, as they train and compete.

One of the dancers is Michaela DePrince, an orphan from Sierra Leone, whose parents were shot when she was only three years old. At four, an American couple adopted her and enrolled her in her first ballet classes. DePrince, now 17, is finishing her last year at the renowned Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre in New York City.

A Huffington Post article published earlier this month discusses the racial obstacles DePrince and dancers like her face:

Being a “dark black ballet dancer,” she said, means she has to work “10 times harder” than everyone else.

In 2007, The New York Times reported that though “other minorities have made inroads in classical ballet, the complicated reality of racial inequality persists, especially for black women.”

That being said, DePrince was recently featured in the just-concluded season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

Chrissy Teigen vs. TEAM BREEZY. UPDATED.

Scroll to the bottom for updates...
Chrissy Teigen, John Legend's Victoria's Secret model fiance decided to share her thoughts on Chris Brown's 2012 Billboard Music Awards performance via Twitter simply stating the following:

And I have to agree with her. On top of Chris Brown's show making me roll my eyes more than once (BMX bikes? Taking off his shirt? The same dance moves I've seen him do before at previous awards shows?) he wasn't even singing! Which is what Ms. Teigen was referring to with her tweet. Well what in the world did she do that for honey, because Team Breezy came back at her on Twitter like a TSUNAMI. But her response to all the nonsense was an absolute Twitter SMACKDOWN:

You guys are too young for this shit. Too f**king young. How you can even form these sentences at someone you don’t know makes me so sad. Don’t throw around the term ho, c*nt, slut. You’re women. WE ARE WOMEN. and don’t ever think a man can f**king control you. Seriously. this isn’t your f**king job. Stop being psychotic. Be strong women. Listen to opinions without spewing pure maliciousness. I’ve had comments ranging from 'kill yourself you stupid HO' to 'gold digging c*nt' [to] 'get a fucking job,' etc. Because I don’t like [Chris Brown]? I like some of his music too. YOU can like it. You CAN. But WHY the insane hate and 'team'?? Why can’t you just CHILL THE F**K OUT? In all seriousness, and this has been entertaining, I’m so disturbed. What are you even doing this for? Some good music and dancing? Good god. DO BETTER."

Pow! And you can officially count me in as a Chrissy Teigen FAN. Seriously, I couldn't have said any of that any better. Well played Chrissy Teigen. Well played.

*UPDATE*
Chris Brown keeps it classy (he DOESN'T) and Team Breezy sees the error of their psychotic ways (they DON'T). Sad, sad, sad.

Whoopi Goldberg introduced the tribute, then John Legend sang "The Greatest Love of All" which was followed by a "I Will Always Love You" performed by Houston's Sparkle co-star, Jordin Sparks.Bobbi Kristina wiped away tears from her eyes during the performances, but after she took the stage to accept the award on her mom's behalf, she was very composed.

"I really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all," the 19-year-old said, with the late singer's manager and sister-in-law Patricia Houston by her side. "Not just from when it was good but when it was bad, too. Thank you for showing that much love, because she deserved it," Bobbi Kristina continued. "I'm just blessed to have been in such an incredible woman's life. There will never be another one, ever." Watch below:

RIP Robin Gibb.

Brothers Robin, Andy and Maurice Gibb
via MTV: The disco-music world lost another soldier just days after its queen, Donna Summer, passed away. On Sunday, Bee Gees member Robin Gibb died after a long battle with colon and liver cancer. The musical group comprised of Gibb and his brothers Barry and Maurice reinvented disco in the late 1970s and became a mainstream success. But it was the inclusion of their music in the John Travolta film "Saturday Night Fever" that really put their stamp on pop culture. Watch The Bee Gees sing "How Deep is Your Love" below...

You Can Call Him Dr. Shaquille O'Neal Now.

No shade on Shaquille at all with this pic, I only posted it because it makes me laugh. A lot. Anyhoo, congrats to Shaquille on his Doctorate Degree...

via Miami Herald: NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal received his doctoral degree in Education from Barry University Saturday morning along with another 1,100 students during multiple commencement ceremonies at the James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami.

Like all things done by the four-time world champion, 15-time All-Star, movie star, rapper and entertainer, O’Neal, 40, accepted the degree in style. Wearing a custom-made, bright red XXXL-sized gown, the seven-foot-one, 325-pound former Miami Heat center got on one knee so Dr. David M. Kopp could place a light blue hood around his big neck.

O’Neal then stood up and lifted his professor like Tarzan was rescuing Jane. "Swept off my feet," Kopp described the moment, celebrated with loud cheers from the crowd.

Beastie Boys Adam Yauch aka MCA Has Died.

via HuffPo: Adam Yauch, who performed under the stage name MCA, is dead after losing a long battle with cancer, according to reports from Global Grind and TMZ. The 47-year-old member of the Beastie Boys announced he would be receiving treatment for a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland in July 2009, and that that as a result the group would cancel some future shows and push back the release of a new album.

In 2011 it had been reported that Yauch had beaten the disease, but reports were sadly exaggerated. On the band's website he wrote:

"Hello My Friends While I’m grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated. I’m continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future." Most recently, it appeared Yauch's health had taken a turn for the worst when it was announced that he was unable to attend the Beastie Boys' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on March 14.

Yauch, along with Michael "Mike D" Diamond, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz started the Beastie Boys in 1979 and have since released eight albums together. On Saturday, May 5, HBO will air the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony honoring the group, who just became the third rap group to enter the Hall, after Run-D.M.C. (2009) and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (2007).

My DIY Solange Inspired Mini Skirt...

I posted this pic of Solange Knowles a few days ago wearing a fab outfit (white blouse, printed jacket and black and gold mini skirt) I didn't realize that I had enough leftover fabric to copy this look until later (my leftover fabric was from my inspired by Camilla Ferro New Orleans Saints dress)
Once I knew I had enough leftover fabric to fit around my hips it was a go. I drafted a pattern for the sequined portion and for a knit lining (the sequin is a bit see through). For the sequined portion, I measured the circumference of my hips, then added a little more room (for my comfort) plus a half inch seam allowance on all sides.
This is how the pattern looked for the sequin portion of the mini skirt (above). I cut (2) for the front, one in black, one in gold and (2) for the back with a half inch seam allowance on all sides. I combined the black and gold panels, edge to edge, with the black on top and the gold on bottom. I measured 7.5 inches top to bottom and 20 inches side seam to side seam. I could have given myself a smidge more room on the top to bottom measurements for comfort, but it still fits and doesn't ride up when walking or sitting.
This pattern would be the main skirt pattern if I didn't have the (see through) sequined overlay. But since I was using this portion as a lining, side seam to side seam was the same as the sequined portion (20 inches) and top to bottom I doubled minus 1 inch which came to 13 inches. Now this is where it gets a little tricky. Being that I'm not an "everyday" sewer, but more of a "sporadic, renegade, shortcut" sewer, sometimes, even I have to take a moment to figure out what in the world I'm doing. So you are welcome to follow along as I attempt to explain what I did...
Once I had (2) black and gold panels sewn together (one for the front and one for the back) it was time to sew the (2) panels to the (2) linings. Note: At this point, aside from combining the black and gold mini skirt panels, everything is still separate. I proceeded to sew the lining(s) to the bottom of the gold end of the mini skirt right side to right side. I repeated this step for the back. Then, with the right side seams together, I sewed the front and back, sequined portion and lining along both side seams using a half inch seam allowance, then flipped the lining inside of the sequined panels (see above). Cutting the lining portion shorter (in length) than the outer sequined portion of the skirt will allow some of the (gold) sequined portion to fold under hiding the lining. From there, I basted the waistline together, measure some quarter inch elastic just above my hips (where the top of the skirt falls) I don't do my waist/hip measurements then take off 1 or 2 inches when working with elastic. Yeah, don't do that. Take the elastic, wrap it around your waist/hips and stretch it/let it out until it feels comfortable for YOU. Then cut it at that point. That's what I do anyway. So once I did that, I proceeded to sew the elastic directly to the inside top/waist of the mini skirt just above my baste stitch. I could have done a casing for the elastic, but see above where I say, I'm a renegade, shortcut sewer. So finally, once that was done, I folded the elastic over, stretched it and sewed the elastic closed. Doing it this way won't work on all fabrics, but because I was working with black thread and black fabric, it was fine. Just use your judgement. I'm pleased with the outcome of it! Check another pic of my results below:

Bobby Says He's Not the Reason Whitney Houston is Gone.

Bobby Brown says he's not the one who introduced Whitney to drugs, but instead, it was the other way around. He says before they met, his only bad habits were alcohol and marijuana, watch below:
Ok, you know what? I believe him. From Whitney's sister-in-law Patricia, to Chaka Khan, there have been numerous people (who knew her) who have said that Whitney was already into some not good stuff long before she met Bobby. When you become successful on a stratospheric level like Whitney Houston did, who knows the kind of element that type of success draws in and what it exposes you to, good and bad. Still so sad nonetheless.

Style Verdict: Motorcyle Jackets & Graphic Maxis.

Ok, full disclosure, I'm posting this trend because I love it. The toughness of the motorcycle jackets paired with a black and white printed maxi is a nice and kind of unexpected visual. I'd certainly wear this trend. But I wanna know what you think about it. Do you like it? Hate it? Don't care? Would you wear it? I wanna know your style verdict.
