Today Marks the 6th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

People waiting to be evacuated from the Superdome Sept. 3, 2005, take cover after the National Guard reported shots being fired outside the arena, six days after Hurricane Katrina hit the city, devastating the lives of Gulf Coast residents and the United States' image in the world.

Photographer: Nicholas Kamm / AFP/Getty Images

The image above of people outside of the Superdome is nothing short of depressing, but it still doesn't completely show the devastation that the people of New Orleans and the coast of Mississippi had to endure when Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast 6 years ago today (August 29, 2005).

St. Bernard Parish has memorials planned today

See how a handful of New Orleans residents are coping 6 years after Hurricane Katrina.

Happy Birthday Michael Jackson...

Nick Ashford of Ashford & Simpson Has Died.

via USA Today: Nick Ashford, who along with wife Valerie Simpson helped set the gold standard for R&B duets, both as songwriters and performers, died of throat cancer Monday in a New York hospital. He was 69.

Ashford & Simpson — you can't think of one without the other — penned and produced almost all of the '60s hits for Motown's Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, including Ain't No Mountain High Enough, You're All I Need to Get By, Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing and Your Precious Love. They also wrote hits for Chuck Jackson, The Shirelles, Maxine Brown and the Fifth Dimension.

Ray Charles' 1966 No. 1 R&B hit Let's Go Get Stoned was their breakthrough record. They would later write and produce Diana Ross' biggest solo hits, including her signature Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand). They also wrote Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman, which was later recorded by Whitney Houston.

Though they had initially performed together in 1964 as Valerie & Nick, after meeting a year earlier at Harlem's White Rock Baptist Church, they didn't fully break out as R&B stars until the late '70s and '80s with songs like Don't Cost You Nothing, It Seems to Hang On, Found A Cure, Street Corner and Solid. They generated excitement onstage with the tall, leonine Ashford trading harmonies with the sultry Simpson. Ashford, who was born in Fairfield, S.C., and raised in Willow Run, Mich., had originally aspired to be a dancer.

The couple, who had been married since 1974, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. They recorded eight albums for Warner Bros., including four that went gold, five with Capitol and two independently. Their last album, 1996's Been Found, was a collaboration with poet Maya Angelo. They continued to perform sporadically and frequently hosted events at their New York restaurant, Sugar Bar.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is Open in D.C.

A memorial to civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. opened to the public on August 22, 2011. The official dedication is on Sunday August 28, but visitors to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., can see the 30-foot sculpture now. The memorial is the first on the National Mall that honors an African American and the first that honors a person who did not serve as president. Click HERE to read more.

Not that it was planned, but I think the timing of the MLK Memorial couldn't be more perfect. In light of the recent success of fictional stories that that showed segregation in this country as a type of friendly "racism lite", the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. being honored in this way is a very real reminder that segregation was an undeniable issue with tragic consequences and Civil Rights was fought hard for. To commemorate Dr. King's Memorial, I've linked below to the American Civil Rights Documentary "Eyes on the Prize" it's 3 parts and gives you a glimpse of the horrors people had to face during the 50's and 60's in the segregated South and some of what they had to endure during the fight for desegregation and rights for all people. We all know that Dr. King was key to this movement. I hope you'll take the time to watch "Eyes on the Prize" at your leisure.

Thoughts and Reviews on THE HELP...

I didn't really care for the movie "The Help" And don't get me wrong, I thought that there were some good performances in the film, "Minny's" Octavia Spencer, Allison Janney who played "Skeeter's" mother, "Hilly's" mother played by Cissy Spacek and of course the backbone of the film, Viola Davis as "Aibileen." Below are a few reviews of the movie that I read and there were a few thoughtful viewpoints that I definitely agreed with, there's also a link to a review that defended the movie. See below:

Association of Black Women Historians Open Letter to Fans of "The Help"
"The Help" Missed Opportunities via The Root
A Critical Review of the novel "The Help"
"The Help" And the Lives of Today's Nannies via Huffington
How "The Help" Failed Us by Dyane Francois via Huffington
Black and White Struggle with a Rosy Glow via Nelson George, New York Times
Treme's Wendell Pierce Takes On "The Help" via NYMag
HSN's Branding of "The Help" (pots and skillets? Really?) is all types of TACKY and WRONG.

And finally, for some balance, a Salon.com writer comes to the defense of the movie, Mary Elizabeth Williams writes Why "The Helps" Critics are All Wrong. The comments responding to her review are equally as  interesting.  I'd love to know what some of you thought about this book/movie as well as any of the movie reviews above.

At Home Hair: I Love My Oils...

These oils are all the oils in my hair arsenal right now. When I first decided definitively to go natural (March 2011) I went full steam ahead trying to learn what people used on their transitioning/natural hair. I visited hair forums, websites, Youtube channels, I bought books, got scared into staying away from using products with sulfates and parabens which I still largely do. But what immediately got me excited were all the oils. OILS. I know. It's like, why oils? I don't know really, but using natural oils had an immediate impact on my decision to go natural for whatever reason. I still to this day can't fully put my finger on why. I dropped a good amount of cash on all these oils 5 months ago, and the only one I've had to replace to date is my Sweet Almond Oil (it's light and velvety which I like so I use a good bit of it).

My essential oils are another whole breed of oils. My Sweet Basil Oil is front and center because it is my hands down favorite EO. I use it in my water/glycerin moisturizing hair spritz. I don't know why the smell of basil makes me so happy, but it does. When I first got all these oils, I turned into this mad scientist mixing different oils, conditioners and lotions. All I was missing was a white lab coat, lol. It still excites me to mix my own hair oils and conditioners. I think I have more oils than brand name hair products right now. So below are a few links to what I've learned about these oils and some of what I've experienced with them so far:

this leaves my hair feeling really smooth after I use it

Taren916 (above link) uses Tea Tree Oil for her scalp massages,
I mix almost every oil I have for my scalp massages, lol (olive, almond, safflower, avocado, scented with rosemary and peppermint) #fanatic

Do you use any of these products or something different? I'd love to know your thoughts, I like learning about new hair/skin at home remedies!

August 13th is Alfred Hitchcock's Birthday...

Alfred Hitchcock was born on August 13th 1899 according to Wikipedia, because everybody knows Wikipedia is the way you verify things in 2011. Duh. Anyhoo, I had to do this post to specifically shout out my husband.

I love vintage thriller movies. LOVE. And I've seen just about all of Alfred Hitchcock's films. "Rope, To Catch a Thief, The Birds, Vertigo, Dial M for Murder - watch the theatrical murder sequence from "Dial M", North by Northwest, Psycho" and more. The reason that I'm giving my husband a shout out is this. I've been married for 15 years going on 16 this year, and it wasn't until our 15th Christmas as a couple that he got me a gift without actually asking me what he should get me and then just telling me to get it. We're talking about LAST YEAR. Dude surprised me with not one, but TWO Alfred Hitchcock movie box sets with no repeating movies. He knew to buy me these box sets entirely from PAYING ATTENTION. I cannot tell you how significant this was. My absolute shock at opening this gift was immeasurable. And he knew it too, lol. I have to say, he was pretty pleased with himself.

So shout out to my husband Ron today on Alfred Hitchcock's 112th birthday for shocking and delighting me last Christmas (I didn't think it was possible) with my Alfred Hitchcock box sets.
I love them :)

Style Verdict: Would You Rock a Red Suit?

I just got this in my inbox from Shopbop and it made me wonder if I could pull this look off. Red is such a bold color and it could be tricky, but I think I could. One thing's for sure, you would definitely stand out and be noticed. I wouldn't wear a bright red suit if I were trying to not be seen in a huge way. It's the same with red lips or anything you wear that's a bold red. Wearing a red suit would be equivalent to walking around with a spotlight on you. So what do you think? Do you like the look of a bright red suit? Hate it? Don't care? Would you wear it?
I wanna know your style verdict.
