"Dance Your Ass Off" Is Anybody Watching?

"Dance Your Ass Off" aired on the Oxygen network and had the highest debut on that network to date. It's Oxygen's new dance/weight loss competition show and features "talented full-figured contestants who struggle with their weight and through dancing unleash their inner thin." The contestant who scores the lowest combined dance and weight loss score is eliminated each week. I just watched the video below, and I think I might be checking it out the next time it airs..

I Really Want BET To Do Better...

Seriously, I don't have much good to say about the 2009 BET Awards and the overly hyped, but nearly non-existent Michael Jackson Tribute *eye roll*. I was taught if you don't have anything nice to say... Anyhoo, click here if you must to see more pics and video from this event.

Remembering Michael Jackson + Stars To Pay Tribute at 2009 BET Awards

The BET Awards are undergoing "a total overhaul" as the show is retooled as a tribute to Michael Jackson, the network said Friday. The telecast is being lengthened, performers are being added to the lineup and additional guests are expected to attend, said Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive of Black Entertainment Television. "We're adding on," Lee said from the Shrine Auditorium, where the awards will be presented Sunday. "We're trying to do the numbers we had already planned and we're trying to add on, so it may be a longer show than we anticipated." At least 30 minutes will be added to the broadcast, she said. Jamie Foxx is set to host the show.

The BET Awards airs on Sunday June 28, 2009.

Artist Spotlight: Singer Songwriter Priscilla Renea..

I don't usually do artist reviews because I get scores of 'em in my inbox on the daily and honestly it would be crazy time consuming to try to mention them all. But something made me click on her single to give it a listen and there was just something about this girls voice that I liked...

New artist Priscilla Renea has already showcased her musical talents to over a million viewers from the comforts of home, she has been self-promoting her musical craft on YouTube for a little over a year. Priscilla's songs have had over 1.6 million views, over 30,000 channel subscribers and scores of imitators. Now signed to Power/Capitol Records, fans can finally experience this YouTube-sensation beyond the webcam with the release of her debut EP "Hello My Apple" (released March 31).

Priscilla poured her heart into songwriting and shared it with a social network of soon-to-be fans. Her debut EP Hello My Apple features three tracks that were among her most popular on YouTube: "I Fell in Love," "Hello My Apple," and "Cry."

Priscilla Renea's debut album, Jukebox, is schedule for release later this year with production by several in-house Power Entertainment talents, along with Brian Kidd (Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Nappy Roots) and Soulshock and Karlin (Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Keyshia Cole, JoJo).

Hip Candy is 3 Years Old Today!

Today is my blog birthday! Hard to believe that Hip Candy has been around for a 3 whole years, with my first post written on June 20, 2006 congratulating the Miami Heat for winning the NBA Championship, lol! Fun times. Anyhoo, this blog started out as a hobby, as it does for so many of us who do it, but it has truly turned into so much more. This blog has taken me to fashion week on both coasts (L.A. and NYC) with my husband Ron who served as my official photographer for the '07 and '08 shows (his runway pics turned out great!), countless interviews as both the interviewer and interviewee, granted me all expense paid trips to cover trade shows (thanks Brizo!) made me a local "cover girl" back in 2008 (thanks 225!) , and blessed me with more free swag than I can ever use myself (thx everybody who sent me free swag!) I just wanted to take this time to say thanks to my advertisers, as I had NO CLUE when I started this thing that I could make $$$ with it, but most of all I wanna say a huge THANK YOU to my readers, because if you guys didn't click on this thing every day, reading, commenting and yes sometimes even encouraging me, it honestly wouldn't be as fun. But really, I truly appreciate each and every one of you.

Thanks for making Hip Candy a part of your online style, entertainment (and current events!) routine..

Lebron James Uses Carol's Daughter to "Keep Off the Ash"

via The Cut:
When Carol’s Daughter unveiled its new hand-and-foot spa called the Back Room on Tuesday, celebs like LeBron James came out to show support (he's friends with one of the venue's investors). The NBA MVP claimed he isn't into the whole spa-treatment scene, but when we chatted him up, he was about to sit down for a cucumber-and-lavender manicure. So is LeBron's beauty stash bigger than ours? "Man, I'm not into that stuff. All I need is a brush. That and some Carol's Daughter Body Butter to keep off the ash," he insisted. "My family, we use this stuff at home." But surely he must need pedicures to keep his feet callous-free? "I wish I had the time to get manicures and pedicures, but the season is so crazy. Some people make the time, but I don't." So there you have it: LeBron James doesn't do beauty treatments. Except for the occasional cucumber-and-lavender mani.

Fashionistas are Flocking to Thrift Stores...

GRACE BELLO clutched her prize to her chest. “This Marc Jacobs dress is making my day — I need it,” she said. At that moment, Jim DePaolis, a sales associate, raced toward her with a Diane Von Furstenberg frock in one hand and a black cocktail dress in the other.

Ms. Bello held up the little black dress, assessing its charms, as Mr. DePaolis began courting her in earnest: “I’m seeing a little retro ’60s girl,” he said. Next, he produced a punkish satin gown that bristled with safety pins, urging Ms. Bello to “imagine this with a pair of motorcycle boots.”

A style-struck pair, Ms. Bello, a writer, and Mr. DePaolis, who has worked for Banana Republic, might have been haunting some Manhattan citadel of chic — Jeffrey in the meatpacking district or Barneys on Madison Avenue. In fact they were in Chelsea, spelunking for treasures at the Goodwill store on West 25th Street.

The 5,500-square-foot thrift outlet is a laboratory of sorts for Goodwill and its 2,200 stores around the country. Intent on sprucing up an image that conjures low-end castoffs and no-frills ambience, many Goodwill stores are courting the shoppers who scour high-end resale shops and department store sales racks for bargains.

“We are making a particularly strong push right now to improve our image, our reputation and our brand, to promote Goodwill as a cool place to shop,” said Jim Gibbons, the chief executive for Goodwill Industries International in Rockville, Md.

Oscar de la Renta 2010 Resort Collection [VIDEO]

Oscar de la Renta showed his 2010 Resort Collection recently and although I took issue with him speaking out against Michelle Obama for not wearing his clothes a while back (entitled?) I have to say, he sent some grand and sophisticated looks down his runway. Some of it almost had a vintage-y kind of throwback feel. His pieces seemed perfectly suited for a Polo match to me. The reds he used in his accessories (shoes, jewelry) and some of his clothing was like candy for your eyes! Especially after the muted Calvin Klein Resort show. Also of note, the "granny" ankle boots that were all over his runway, looks like they're big for Resort and they'll remain big this fall. I scored a black pair earlier this spring for only $11 bucks! I can't tell you how pleased with myself that made me :-)

Calvin Klein Resort 2010 Collection [VIDEO]

I really think I was digging the chic low, loose ponytail on the models more than I was feeling some of the clothes from Calvin Klein's 2010 Resort Collection. And he pretty much stuck to a muted color palette which is pretty consistent for him, but geez! I would have loved to see a pop of some kind of color (a muted olive green, a pale blue perhaps?) because c'mon! We are talking about a "Resort" collection. VIDEO of the show in its entirety below:

Completed My 2nd Maxi Dress!

Completed my 2nd maxi dress late last night (see my first one here), and it didn't come without it's challenges, but I'm constantly improving, I can tell. And even though my dress form fills out the bust area on this dress more than I do, I'm still pretty pleased with it :-).
See the dress here before it was finished.

Who Had the LOOK on LOCK?

Paris Hilton and Rihanna both rocked the same black and white two-toned Alexander Wang dress recently. So who do you think looked best in it?

New Sade Album Coming Soon?

I vote YES.

Sade Adu, the reclusive "quiet storm" soul signer who takes notoriously long breaks between releases, has regrouped with the band that bears her name and is recording her first album of new material since 2000's "Lovers Rock," Billboard.com sources confirm. The group is in the studio through June and Sony hopes to put the record out by the end of 2009 though, despite rumors, there is no set release date on the calendar.

"She is in the studio and the album will come when it is ready," a source at Sony tells Billboard. "You don't wait for years for one and then rush it."

Sade's longtime bandmate Stuart Matthewman, a.k.a. Cottonbelly, also confirms that new material is in progress, though he says the project is still in its "early days" and won't be close to finished until "later in the year."

Last week, rumors of a new Sade album surfaced when the official-looking website sade2009.com went live with a message claiming a release date of November 24, 2009 for a new album. However, the source at Sade's label denies any connection to that site. "We do not know where that fan site could have got that release date from, but it is 100% not true." Billboard contacted the site's owner and web developer, who insisted that the release date was "official;" since his response, however, the site's posting has been updated with a correction: "The date above has been changed, a representative from Sony confirmed the new date to be unknown. Please check back for the update on Sade's album release."

Though no details about Sade's new music have yet been revealed, one artist may have already heard snippets: Maxwell, a fellow Sony recording artist and longtime friend and collaborator with Matthewman, who will soon release a new record of his own ("BLACKsummer'snight," July 7) after a multi-year hiatus. The R&B singer sent a message to fans in March via his private Facebook page in which he indicated that he'd heard some of his labelmate's new recordings. "Trust me, it's so monolithic it'll shake you in your shoes!" he wrote.

Sade's 2000 release, "Lovers Rock," sold 3,881,000 copies in the U.S. and the prior album, 1992's "Love Deluxe," sold 3,407,000. Since 1985's "Diamond Life" debut, Sade has sold nearly 17 million units in the U.S. alone according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Making Progress (Maxi Dress #2)...

I started working on my 2nd maxi dress last week working with this fabric (see my 1st maxi dress here) and I must say, I'm making good progress! I made some changes to the pattern (dropped the neckline bodice lower, eliminated the "halter" tie in back and created a racerback instead, and reduced the width of the empire waist band) I wanna be done with it this week.

The racerback...

The maxi skirt is cut out...

The in seam pockets!
