The Smithsonian Wants Aretha's Inaugural Hat..

via People

Michelle Obama’s now-famous Jason Wu gown isn’t the only piece of Inaugural fashion that is headed for the Smithsonian. The museum is also requesting the now-iconic hat that Aretha Franklin wore while singing at the swearing-in. Aretha, however, is still undecided about parting with her Luke Song-designed hat. “I am considering it. It would be hard to part with my chapeau since it was such a crowning moment in history,” says the Queen of Soul. “I would like to smile every time I look back at it and remember what a great moment it was in American and African-American history. Ten cheers for President Obama.” If Franklin decides to donate the hat to the museum, it will become part of an exhibit of President Obama’s Inaugural display along with Michelle’s gown.

Angelina Jolie Wore This Dress the Wrong Way. On Purpose.

Angelina Jolie wore this Max Azria dress backwards to the SAG Awards last weekend. Intentionally. Sorry, but that doesn't change my postion on this dress one bit. Her stylist Jen Rade told US magazine.com that Jolie purposely turned around the dress -- which was from Azria's spring 2009 collection -- to make it "more blouson." (The actress was also able to show off her tattoos more.) Wow. she's such a trendsetter. *yawn*

Spotlight on Ikram: A Fave Boutique of Michelle Obama..

It's been well documented by now that First Lady Michelle Obama has a favorite Chicago Boutique where she shops. Ikram Boutique is where Michelle likes to purchase her unique, high end fashion, and it's located on Chicago's gold coast at 873 North Rush Street.

Ikram can also be credited for Michelle's Jason Wu ivory gown, the Loree Rodkin jewelry and the Jimmy Choo shoes she wore to the inauguration balls, as well as the sunny Isabel Toledo ensemble and green Choo shoes she chose for daytime. Check Michelle O. Style to learn more about Ikram, the high end boutique that Michelle has an affinity for.

SAG Awards: Best and Worst of the Red Carpet [LINK]

I disagreed with the people over at Yahoo on a couple of their "best" and "worst"choices. For instance, Angelina Jolie should NOT have been on the best dressed list. Her Max Azria dress was boring enough to put you to sleep. She could have just worn a hospital gown. And Jane Krakowski (from "30 Rock") should NOT have been on the worst dressed list IMHO. Now I'll admit, the extremely low cut in front was a bit severe, but other than that, it had clean lines! And pockets! And did you see her dress from the opposite side? It had an athletic inspired racerback design in the back that I loved. I thought her dress was fabulous. I was pretty much on the same page with the rest of it.

Jenna & Barbara Bush's Sweet Letter to the Obama Girls..

I honestly thought the letter from the Bush twins to Sasha and Malia was really sweet and genuine. They read it to the Obama girls via the TODAY Show earlier:

People Going Crazy for Aretha Franklin's Inaugural Hat..

I've read varying accounts of what some journalist and commentators had to say about Aretha Franklin's head gear during the Inauguration, and quite frankly, I was a little surprised at the shock. One journalist even went so far to say that Aretha was trying to make the Inauguration "all about her" by wearing such a huge, attention grabbing hat. When in reality, huge "church hats" are deeply rooted in black, southern culture. If you grew up African-American in the South, that's just something you witnessed at church services weekly. Seriously, no big deal. Anyhoo, people are now clamoring for this hat whether commentators thought it was appropriate or not:

via Huffington Post by Corey Williams
The calls began to flood Luke Song's hat shop not long after Aretha Franklin finished belting out "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" at President Barack Obama's inauguration. Franklin, who wore a gray felt custom-designed hat from Mr. Song Millinery, has inadvertently caused an economic boom for the South Korean immigrant's store.

Song said he wasn't prepared for the hundreds of calls requesting the hat with a Swarovski rhinestone-bordered bow. "We even have a lot of men calling to get it for their wives, mothers and grandmothers," Song said. The hat worn by the "Queen of Soul" was hand-molded and would cost upward of $500 _ if it were for sale, the 36-year-old designer said. Customers instead were offered a satin ribbon version for $179.

"They want the same hat, but they understand it's for the 'Queen' only," he said. "Ninety-nine percent said, 'That's fine. I'll get the next best thing.'" The family millinery has been in Detroit for about 25 years, and Franklin has been a customer for about 20 of those years. The store also sells to about 500 boutiques across the country.

"We always make hats for her for high-profile events, so for us, the inauguration really was no big deal," Song told The Associated Press on Thursday. The design for Franklin's hat came from two different hats at the store. "She walked through the shop and said 'I want that bow (put) on that hat,'" he said. "She had the coat already, but she needed the hat to set it off."

The Obama's PDA Packed Lovefest...

The following article by Bonnie Fuller articulated so well how in love with each other the Obama's looked (and I'm talking about the girls too!) during the Inaugural ceremonies that I couldn't have said it any better...

Wow! America didn't just swear in a president, the nation also elected a pair of Lovebirds-in-Chief. On January 20th, we got married to the Obamas for at least the next four years, and it looked like the Obamas virtually renewed their vows in front of our eyes. Over the course of the ten inaugural balls that the pair had to dash to and dance at, the couple held hands, nuzzled, snuggled, and even kissed up a storm. At one gala alone, Barack smooched Michelle at least four or five times while holding her close in a dance. It was practically a presidential makeout session.

To top it off, Michelle's Jason Wu confection of a gown was as elegantly wedding cake-ish as a dress could be. The couple seemed to be saying that the presidency was an all-important adventure that they were embarking on together while renewing their own vows on a national stage, after Barack made his own professional vow to the country earlier in the day.

Perhaps it's because the contract between the president and our country is so like a marriage that several first ladies have chosen a white gown for inaugural ball night: Jackie Kennedy in Oleg Cassini, Nancy Reagan in Galanos, and Laura Bush in Oscar de la Renta. Mary Todd Lincoln also donned white on inaugural night.

Frankly, a lovey-dovey duo is just what we need right now, especially when the affection appears completely real -- not the least bit fakey-fake. After all, the euphoria and the love fests that the country feels right now for the Obamas is totally genuine, and, like all lovers, we want to know that we can be truly, madly and deeply loved back. If Obama can feel that way about his wife -- and his daughters -- then we know he's capable of feeling that about us, too.

Here's the thing: a lot of us didn't feel that our last president loved us very much. And in fact, he seemed awfully focused on himself, not us. Whatever his private feelings for his wife, Laura, he never performed such a public display of affection ever, let alone on the night that would set the tone of his presidency.

I think last night's nookie -- on one level -- said a lot about how the Obamas were a "real" and loving couple, and their romance and marriage will be strengthened by the intellectual challenges which they will face together.

On another level, it says our new president is a "sharer" -- he unselfishly shared the limelight with Michelle. When he embraced her, it made it easier to believe in his spoken commitment to leave behind divisive partisanship in exchange for a new era of inclusiveness.

But boy, is he ever setting a high bar for husbands across the country, too!!

See what professional stylists had to say about Michelle Obama's white Inaugural gown here.

Jill Biden's Red Inaugural Dress was by Reem Acra...

Am I the only one fascinated with Jill and Joe Biden? They seem so down to earth, I honestly just want to hang out with them, laugh and eat barbeque together. It's funny, but I don't ever remember having the same warm and fuzzy feelings towards any other Vice President and his wife. Anyways designer Reem Acra is fast becoming the "go to" designer for red gowns. Remember this red number that Eva Longoria Parker wore recently to the Golden Globes? That was Reem Acra as well. Anyhoo, I thought Jill Biden (she's so tiny!) was stunning in red during the inaugural balls.

It's A New Day in America...

"It's A New Day" by Will.I.Am

Well, America has officially hit the reset button. We've elected our next President, Barack Obama and it's a fabulous new day in this country! I am so hopeful for the future of America, but like President Obama said in his Inaugural speech, we all have to take responsibility, roll up our sleeves and do our parts. It's a new day.

Michelle Wears Romantic Jason Wu Gown to Inaugural Balls...

Photo via Getty Images

I was so hoping that Michelle would go bold and show off her fabulous arms and shoulders for the Inaugural Balls, and that she did in this cream colored Jason Wu gown. Not since Nancy Reagan has a First Lady shown so much skin in an Inaugural ball gown, and I don't see a thing wrong with that! The dress is very youthful, but so is Michelle Obama. Barack and Michelle are the youngest first couple that America has had since JFK. See a few more Inaugural Ball pics of President Obama and First Lady Michelle over at Michelle O. January 20th, 2009: "Moving Day" For The Obama's...

via the NYTimes
President Bush and his wife, Laura, will wake up at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Tuesday morning, just as they have the last eight years. But by the time the new president, Barack Obama, returns from the inaugural parade with his family in late afternoon, there will be nary a box of theirs left to unpack. Clothes will be neatly folded in drawers, pictures will rest on dresser tops and walls, stuffed animals will lie on beds, as if the Obamas had always lived there.

The highly orchestrated quick-change operation, conducted by the 93-member White House residence staff, has no parallel in the outside world. The entire affair is over and done with in a matter of hours, without a single moving man setting foot inside the Executive Mansion.

“It’s controlled chaos,” said Ann Stock, who was social secretary in the Clinton White House. “They have about four to five hours to completely unpack, put everything away in the closets, put the family pictures up and to really make the house the Obamas’ home by the time they come in from the parade. It’s really quite an extraordinary switchover.”

“In the morning, the president and first lady are saying their goodbyes to the White House and to the residence staff; there’s a very emotional meeting and a goodbye,” he said. “Then the staff has to turn right around and become the staff of the Obamas by the afternoon. It’s not an easy task.”

True to form, the Bushes, who prided themselves on running an efficient White House, have not left their packing until the last minute. Preparations have been going on for weeks, both on the business side of the mansion, the West Wing, and in the residence.

If the past is any guide, Tuesday’s move will begin about 10:45 a.m., right after the Bushes, who will have hosted the Obamas for the traditional Inauguration Day coffee, leave for the swearing-in at the Capitol. Veterans of previous White House moves say that typically, a moving van arrives to deliver the new first family’s belongings to the waiting residence staff. Each member of the staff will have a task, assigned well in advance. If all goes well, the exercise will unfold with the precision of an orchestral piece.

It helps, of course, that there is little, if any, furniture to move; the White House maintains a warehouse of antiques and furnishings for presidents to choose from. When the Bushes arrived in 2001, they brought with them just one piece, “a special chest of drawers” that had belonged to the president’s grandmother, Ms. McDonough said.

The Obamas are leaving all their furniture at their house in Chicago.

“That is their home base — their Crawford, if you will,” said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, press secretary to Michelle Obama. “They are bringing their clothes, pictures, creature comforts for their 10- and 7-year-olds, stuffed animals and games, those little touches that make a new house feel like home.”

This Right Here Was a MIRACLE.

US Airways Flight 1549 crash landed into the Hudson River on January 15th, and everybody, EVERYBODY walked safely off that piece. This whole event was a miracle from heaven! And the pilot, Chesley Sullenberger needs to get some kind of Congressional medal of honor, a front row seat at the presidential inauguration [*Update: DONE], a purple heart, a key to the city, a People's Choice Award and free Pizza Hut thin crust pizza for life. Mr. Sullenberger was the last to exit the plane and he walked the aisle, not once, but twice to make sure that everyone had safely exited the aircraft. See, this incident right here is why people should always pray before takeoff and landing. I will never, ever be convinced that somebody on this flight didn't say a prayer. Prayer works.

Desiree Rogers, The Obama's Social Secretary, Prepares For Her New Job..

Via VOGUE (Style.com)
Desirée Rogers, the woman who will be responsible for every social event and ceremony—from a tea for two to a peace-treaty signing for thousands—in the Obama White House, was visiting Letitia Baldrige prior to officially stepping into her new job as special assistant to the president and White House social secretary, a position Baldrige held during the Kennedy administration.

Baldrige, kindly offered Rogers some helpful tips, like always having a backup plan if the First Lady is unable to attend a function or, for state dinners, checking whether any of the guests have children and, if they do, arranging for a signed gift from the First Family to mark the occasion—something special, like a book, that they will remember for a lifetime.

"Desirée is so poised and so charming, so substantial and capable, but nonetheless I told her how important it is to always stand up to the West Wing," Baldrige recounted later. "The West Wing is the men's side, and they will want to push you to put all those politicians on the dinner lists, and you've got to be strong and say no. Always represent what the First Lady and the president want. In the case of the Obamas, it's an exciting mix of people—not paybacks."

The mandate the Obamas have given her, Rogers said, "is about instilling pride." Her job "is helping people visualize what the Obama presidency is about, the feelings Americans voted for—inclusion, transparency, embracing people you might never otherwise learn about—and also translating the splendor, that sweetness, that comfort of the White House to everyone." She paused and smiled. "Enormous task."

Indeed, in these troubled economic times, how exactly will the Obamas revitalize the White House? "Using the assets already there," Rogers said. "We have to be balanced. People think that being 'social' means hosting a lavish party, but that's not true. We all thrive on social interaction, and we must continue to," despite the economy.

Desiree Rogers was interviewed for VOGUE'S February 2009 issue which will be out on newstands on Inauguration day, January 20th. You can continue reading more of this article over at VOGUE.

Trash Fashion to be Showcased at Green Inaugural Ball..

l to r: A recycled coat made from video and cassette tape, a dress made from thrown out plastic Obama posters, a dress made from Target shopping bags.

Nancy Judd, a very creative designer who makes fashion from trash has been invited to attend Saturday's Green Inaugural Ball in honor of President Elect Barack Obama. More deets below:

Ms. Judd spends her days in a studio here crafting clothing from castoff plastic bags, electrical wire and old cassette tapes. Now, her Dumpster couture has caught the eye of environmental activists, who plan to showcase her work in Washington at Saturday's Green Inaugural Ball honoring President-elect Barack Obama.

The star piece: A man's coat made from Mr. Obama's campaign fliers. She says it took her 200 hours to cut and paste and sew it. Showing her stuff in the nation's capital is a big step for a woman who used to put on a furry blue costume and sweat her way through parades as Carlos Coyote, Santa Fe's recycling mascot. Working for the city trash department, Ms. Judd did the coyote gig for years. She also ran workshops and recorded radio ads urging New Mexicans to recycle. But she worried that nobody was paying attention.

Ms. Judd began to wonder whether she could spark new interest in solid waste by making garbage glamorous. Ms. Judd, who is 40 years old, has no training in fashion. She can't sketch. She gets design ideas from old paper dolls. Still, she figured out how to craft a saucy cocktail dress from a shower curtain and aluminum cans. She fashioned a slinky black gown from canvas scraps and hundreds of rusty nails. When worn, it clinks alluringly.

She once spent 400 hours, she says, unspooling cassettes and crocheting the crinkled tape into a fake-fur coat (shown above, left). As attire, the outfits have their limitations. An evening gown sparkling with 12,000 bits of glass tends to shed; a fitted jacket cut from the vinyl top of a convertible is so well insulated, it doubles as a sweat lodge. Also, says Ms. Judd, "you can't sit down in any of them."

A Few Inaugural Ball Attendance Tips [VIDEO]

For those of you actually going to D.C. for this year's historic Presidential Inauguration, Roxanne Roberts from the Washington Post offers up a few tips on how to survive the (many) inaugural balls this year. Watch:

Obama Inauguration to Air in Selected Theaters...

via The Hollywood Reporter
President-elect Barack Obama is on his way to the big screen, thanks to a deal between MSNBC and Screenvision that will put the news channel's inaugural coverage in 27 theaters around the country.

Free tickets are being handed out via MSNBC.com to see the inauguration and parade from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. ET at the 27 theaters run by 11 exhibitor partners in 21 markets. Midday Tuesday isn't necessarily a big movie time, so it helps to fill the theater -- and boost popcorn and soda sales -- at a time when it's not usually busy.

That means that Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews and other MSNBC and NBC personalities will play the big movie screen in addition to the usual MSNBC cable and satellite stream. MSNBC won't be in high-definition until the second quarter, but both the channel and Screenvision say the quality will still be high.

"It'll look great," MSNBC president Phil Griffin said. "We're thrilled about it." Screenvision was approached by MSNBC last year about carrying the coverage in some of the same theaters that take Screenvision's preroll video, executive vp exhibitor relations Darryl Schaffer said. Since August 2007, Screenvision has had an alternative programming division that has exhibited New York Mets baseball games, operas and other events live via movie theaters. Schaffer said that Screenvision had the capability to do as many as 200 locations, though MSNBC was looking for a smaller event than that.

For MSNBC, it's a chance to continue the momentum that vaulted it into the fastest-growing channel in all of cable in 2008. That's the strategy, and Griffin said Monday afternoon to expect more in 2009 to build MSNBC's brand. "We want to reach people we've never reached before," Griffin said. "We're going to do numerous things like that to get our name out there. Ubiquity is the name of the game in 2009."

66th Annual Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Rundown..

The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place tonight, and after last year when the awards show was scrapped because of the strikes, the celebs were ready to come out and celebrate this year. Check out my brief rundown of some of what this year's Globes red carpet had to offer...

First off, let me say, I ♥ Heidi Klum. Heidi's dress (vintage James Galanos) was fun and different. Loved it.

WHITE/NEUTRAL DRESSES

There were gobs and gobs of white, off white and nude colored dresses on the red carpet this year! What I posted above is just a sampling, there was so much more white on the red carpet, it was a virtual snowstorm.  The winner in the white category would have to go to Kate Beckinsale for me (2nd from left). The white dress I liked least? Probably Sandra Bullock's. The bottom of it is giving me an antebellum, "Gone With The Wind" type vibe that I'm really not feeling. (l to r: Elizabeth Banks in J. Mendel, Kate Beckinsale in J. Mendel, Sandra Bullock in Dior, Eva Mendes in Dior, Penelope Cruz in Georgio Armani Prive, Beyonce in Elie Saab)

JEWEL TONED DRESSES

A few celebs opted to go with bright jewel toned color which always pops on the red carpet. My winner in the jewel toned bright color category would have to be Mary Louise Parker's bright blue gown (2nd from left) and the dress I liked least here would be Freida Pinto's gold gown. (l to r: Freida Pinto in Christian Lacroix Haute Couture, Mary Louise Parker in Carlos Miele, Christina Applegate in Roberto Cavalli, Anne Hathaway in Georgio Armani Prive, and Laura Linney)

BLACK DRESSES

It's pretty hard to mess up black formal wear, but trust, it can be done (see Renee Zellwegger below..) I think Taraji P. Henson looked really pretty on the carpet, the pics don't really do her justice here, but my favorite black look out of the ones above would have to be Sally Hawkins (far right) I really liked the way that dress flowed. And actress Lisa Edelstein (2nd from left) gets my honorable mention. I love the bow detail on her dress. My least favorite here was Tina Fey's dress, and I ♥ Tina Fey, but I did not ♥ her dress tonight. (l to r: Taraji P. Henson in J. Mendel, Lisa Edelstein, Kate Winslet in Yves St. Laurent, Tina Fey, and Sally Hawkins)

J. MENDEL DESIGNER DRESSES

Designer J. Mendel had dresses out in full force on the 2009 Golden Globes red carpet. The four J. Mendel dresses above are the ones I was able to catch.

RED DRESSES

Yes, a few celebs did dare to wear red on the red carpet. Sometimes it can work (Sally Field's dress works to me because of the shorter length) and sometimes the red carpet can drown out your red dress, which is what's happening in Eva Longoria Parker's case. Eva's Reem Acra dress was beautiful and it fit her perfectly but it get's lost in the pictures because it's almost the exact same shade as the carpet. Kyra Sedgewick's Oscar de la Renta dress (center) comes off a little better because it's darker.

THE LAST TWO DRESSES OF MY RED CARPET CRITIQUE...

I thought Viola Davis' dress was different, it had a unique kind of webbed design that gave it a bit of an edge. And the fit was great on her. Renee Zellwegger's Carolina Herrera blouse and black mermaid skirt on the other hand should not have made it off the hanger IMO. Renee is usually so polished and together on the red carpet, so whoever told her that this weird sheer bodiced, victorian skirted gown was red carpet ready was doing some major lie-telling.  Sooo not cool.
